SMU Lor

![]() Okay, I just checked my application status online and saw this update. Are they efficient or what? It was a pleasant surprise no doubt, but at the same time I'm also slightly apprehensive because I'm not too certain if it was a hasty decision the admission committee made in a possibly desperate attempt to fill its vacancies. I thought about my assumptions for a while, and decided that admission procedures ought not to be a good measure of quality of education. In other words, a widely faulted admission system cannot instantly indicate that there is also something wrong with its, say, teaching pedagogy or curriculum. As you can tell, I'm trying to convince myself to believe in the SMU system. I can't say I am 100% bought over by their LLB curriculum. About 30% of the modules are compulsory non-law modules (e.g. physical science, finance, Asian history) and I don't know how well I will do in them or how useful they will be. The only consolation is probably the fact that my polytechnic diploma and 'O' Level grades can grant me certain exemptions, which is not much of a consolation since it would also depend on specific modules taken as well as grades obtained. Crap, I swore never to touch economics, history or physics again. However, since this is the only LLB offer for me this year, it would take nothing more than common sense to accept it, especially since there is the possibility to upgrade to a double degree, subject to good results, afterwards. This could essentially help fulfil my interests in both law and psychology. Nevertheless, if more university and/or scholarship offers are to come by in the coming years, then perhaps there will be room for further consideration. Right now, I'm contented with the way things are. Labels: academia, surprise, university |

Hi
Im a poly graduate who got into SMU Law too. Im from TP's Law and Management diploma and I'll be starting in 2010, if I do decide to stick with my confirmation with SMU.
When are you headed and where were you from? :D

Hi there,
Nice to hear about poly grads making it!
I'm also starting in 2010. Was previously from NP Mass Communication.
I'm still keeping my options open though, because I'd really prefer NUS Law or UK Law, but I'll see how things go. :)

Haha cool, 2010 :)
I dont know about NUS, but yeah, Im kinda hoping to go to the UK to do the LLB too. I'm not feeling SMU's incessant preachings of "developing effective corporate and commercial lawyers".
Kinda got my eyes set on KCL or UCL, I hear 2 DWM holders from SP's Banking & Finance programme got offers, but they eventually chose Warwick Law instead.
Kinda hope I'll be able to do the LNAT before enlisting :)

I too don't feel too good about SMU's LLB curriculum after looking through it as thoroughly as possible. Something just seems to be lacking, which is why SMU is probably the last on my list.
I'm also considering, among other universities, KCL and UCL. Some uni admission officers told me that our local diplomas are not acceptable for their law programme, while others were pretty vague. Only UCL came back with a positive reply. Geez suddenly it seems easier to get into NUS law than UK law. Hmm.
Just curious, the two that chose Warwick - are they directly entering the law programme or going through the 1-year foundation programme?
Oh and by the way, I think it's possible to book out after enlistment just to do university admission tests. At least that's what my commander told me. But of course, I guess it's better to just settle everything first before enlistment.
